Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Carlton L. Sells (ASN: 34598202), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944, in Germany. Technical Sergeant Sells was leading his platoon in an assault upon the Siegfried Line when he was mortally wounded. Realizing the tenseness of the situation, he refused to be evacuated and despite his severe wounds, he continued to direct, encourage, and exhort his comrades on into the attack. As a result of his inspiring courage and unselfish leadership, his platoon remained under control and succeeded in completing its mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Sells, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
