The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Herbert F. McKenna (ASN: 91192), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Villers-sur-Fere, France, on 28 July 1918. At the beginning of the attack against the enemy positions on the north bank of the River Ourcq, Sergeant McKenna was wounded in the arm by a machine-gun bullet, yet he continued in the advance and took charge of his platoon when its commander was killed. When the first attack was over he received first aid and then returned to his company, where he assumed the duties of first sergeant in addition to his duties as a platoon commander.
