The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John J. Sciullo (ASN: 33785685), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 5 February 1945, at 1400 hours, near Fort Mortier, France, Private First Class Sciullo left the cover of his fighting hole to evacuate to safety fifteen seriously wounded men. Although shell fragments barely missed him, Private First Class Sciullo raced forward 100 yards to the wounded men, and still under the heavy enemy shell fire, removed every casualty to sheltered positions forty yards away. He then moved back 700 yards to the Battalion Aid Station, guided back two aid men, and assisted them in treating these casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Sciullo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
