The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Aloysius A. Schulte (ASN: 35696911), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 34th Infantry Division, in action on 8 July 1944, in the vicinity of Castellina, Italy. When the company attacked three houses south of the town, one squad from each platoon occupied the first house. The rest of the company attempted to join them, but severe enemy machine gun fire pinned them down. Sergeant Schulte voluntarily crawled to within eight yards of the enemy emplacement under ceaseless fire from the gun, then stood fully exposed as he covered the advance of his comrade who accompanied him. He then threw hand grenades and fired his rifle so accurately that five of the enemy were killed or wounded and several more fled in confusion. The company, largely due to Sergeant Schulte’s courage and determination, was then able to advance and capture their objective.
