Headquarters, 3d Armored Division, General Orders No. 24 (August 6, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Carl E. Schroer (ASN: 6938013), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 33d Armored Regiment, 3d Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France on 11 July 1944. Staff Sergeant Schroer, in the lead tank of a column supporting friendly infantry, sighted an enemy tank and fired three rounds, destroying the tank and killing the entire crew. Soon afterwards, the infantry was fired upon from a pillbox which Staff Sergeant Schroer immediately sighted and destroyed. As the column proceeded, he noticed a tunnel leading from a house and around to the rear. He fired on the house causing one officer and 37 men to surrender. The officer reported more than a company of his men in the tunnel and requested medical aid for them. As the aid men and infantry went forward to assist, they were fired on, whereupon Staff Sergeant Schroer fired and destroyed the building, a virtual arsenal, and over 100 of the enemy left in it. His tank advanced further and came upon another enemy tank which was immediately knocked out after which the turret traverse of Staff Sergeant Schroer’s tank was damaged by artillery fire. Despite this, he continued to advance and furnished his commanding officer with much valuable information on enemy positions. Staff Sergeant Schroer’s clear thinking, unflinching devotion to duty and complete disregard for his own personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and served as an inspiration to his comrades.
