Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 92 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur Schoop, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 29 February 1944. When intense fire from two enemy machineguns temporarily halted the advance of his company, Private First Class School ran forward 40 yards and went into position with his light machinegun. Ignoring enemy sniper and automatic weapons fire which struck within inches of him, he knocked out one enemy gun 500 yards away. Shifting his fire, he force the crew of a second gun 400 yards away to withdraw. When a German sniper killed an officer and wounded an enlisted man 15 yards from him, he killed the sniper. His intense fire then forced a large group of enemy riflemen to withdraw to a creek bed. When orders to cease fire came he started out for the creek bed with his pistol but was held back. Resuming his firing position, he guarded his company front for an hour and a half while the company reorganized to continue the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
