The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Francis McGowan (ASN: 60991), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-St. Remy, France, 12 September 1918. Accompanying two other soldiers, Sergeant McGowan rushed forward in advance of his lines, exposed to heavy machine-gun fire, and attacked an enemy machine-gun stronghold which was halting the progress of his platoon. He succeeded in capturing two guns and six of the crew who were manning them.
