The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Vernon H. Schock (ASN: 0-1318092), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period from 2 October 1944 to 11 October 1944, in Germany. As Platoon Leader of the leading platoon of his battalion, which was engaged in an assault upon the Siegfried Line, First Lieutenant Schock skillfully directed the operations of his men and displayed such extraordinary courage, initiative, and daring that his platoon captured one hundred and eight prisoners and killed a known ten additional enemy soldiers. The actions included heavy and bitter street fighting, a river crossing, an assault upon an enemy pillbox, and a fire fight in which a force of only eight men engaged a numerically superior enemy. The exceptional soldierly qualities and bravery exhibited by this gallant officer reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
