The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Kenneth B. Schley (ASN: 0-413108), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 28th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Belgium on 25 December 1944. Lieutenant Schley, with full knowledge of the danger involved, courageously volunteered to deliver urgently needed penicillin to troops surrounded at Bastogne in his unarmed piper cub. Because of the darkness, he had no landmarks to serve as guides to his destination. With only a compass, Lieutenant Schley bravely set forth without knowledge of how or where he would land his plane. Skillfully maneuvering his plane so as to avoid antiaircraft fire he arrived in the vicinity of Bastogne and found the town in total obscurity. Having no communication, he circled the town at a low altitude, gunning his motor to attract attention and in the hope that a landing field would be indicated to him. At first he received no recognition and had decided to attempt a landing in the darkness but just as he was about to do so, flashlights appeared designating the area in which he should land his plane. Expertly maneuvering his plane he executed the landing successfully and the penicillin was made available where it was most urgently needed. By his gallantry, complete disregard for his own safety and outstanding ability, Lieutenant Schley reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
