The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private John McGeary (ASN: 90532), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Villers-sur-Fere, France, on 1 August 1918. During this action Private McGeary left his shelter and went out into heavy shell and machine-gun fire to rescue a wounded comrade, receiving fatal wounds in the attempt.
