The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Michael J. McGarty (ASN: 1711473), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 306th Machine-Gun Battalion, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chevieres, near Grand Pre, France, 14 October 1918. With utter disregard for his own personal safety Sergeant McGarty went forward under heavy enemy machine-gun fire to rescue a severely wounded officer, and displayed extraordinary heroism in action by helping to carry him to a place of safety.
