Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (November 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert F. Schain (ASN: 42047325), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1944, in Germany. Learning from a prisoner that a group of the enemy were located in a building, Private First Class Schain on his own initiative courageously moved to within speaking distance of the house and called to the officer in charge to surrender. He argued so convincingly that he was able to return to his company leading a column of thirty-six prisoners. Private First Class Schain’s gallant action stifled enemy resistance in the section and enabled his company to take its objective without a casualty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Schain, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
