(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Staff Sergeant Frank P. Scardello, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 14th Tank Battalion, 9th Armored Division during World War II. While spearheading a column proceeding along an enemy-held road near St. Vith, Belgium, Sergeant Scardello’s tank was hit by anti-tank fire. With utter disregard for the concentrated hostile small arms fire around his position, he evacuated his crew from the disabled tank and skillfully led them, without suffering a casualty, through the fire-swept terrain to safety. The devotion to duty and intrepidity displayed by Sergeant Scardello reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
