Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 60 (September 18, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Walter A. Scarborough (ASN: 33340413), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division on 11 July 1944 in France. Corporal Scarborough was assigned to duty as a cannoneer with an infantry force, which was assaulted during the early morning hours by a hostile counter-thrust, spearheaded by tanks. When Corporal Scarborough was awakened by the battle, he discovered most of the men in the area pinned down by the ferocity of the hostile fire. Immediately and voluntarily, he started carrying ammunition to an anti-tank gun which two of his comrades were manning. He then relieved one of the men at the gun who had been wounded earlier in the engagement, and remained at the gun until the attack was repelled. Corporal Scarborough’s voluntary action, performed at great risk to his life, materially contributed to the prevention of an enemy penetration of our positions. The aggressive determination and heroic devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Scarborough reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
