The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Warren C. Sayers (ASN: 0-545815), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 and 2 September 1944, in Belgium. First Lieutenant Sayers, a liaison pilot, distinguished himself in the performance of a mission which involved reporting on the conditions ahead of the route of march of an advancing task force. Despite enemy fire, adverse weather conditions, and the hazards of operating over completely unfamiliar enemy terrain, First Lieutenant Sayers courageously kept his craft in the air ahead of the advancing column and informed it of conditions in its route of advance. First Lieutenant Sayers’ gallantry and skill on this occasion was highly instrumental in effecting a smooth, well organized, and highly successful advance which covered one hundred and thirty miles in seventy-two hours. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Sayers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
