Headquarters, 41st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 55 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard J. Satran, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 163d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Biak Island on 26 June 1944. First Lieutenant Satran commanded a company in a predawn attack on enemy positions. One platoon leader, whose platoon had been forced to withdraw, was killed. First Lieutenant Satran assumed command of the sector. He moved forward abreast of the foremost troops to a point from which he could observe the enemy though he had little protection. He brought mortar fire in so close that fragments sprayed all around him. When some of the resistance was silenced, First Lieutenant Satran motioned to a group of men near his position and on his signal all friendly fire ceased. He led the men forward, delivering assault fire and grenades as they advanced. They regained all formerly held positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Satran, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
