The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William A. Sarver (ASN: 0-1170962), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 67th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Armored Division, in action against the enemy in *****, on 6 April 1945. Lieutenant Sarver, while acting as artillery observer and in charge of a reconnaissance section that was attacked to an infantry regiment, was advancing with his men along a ravine when they were fired upon by a German outpost. He was hit and dropped to he ground while his men took cover in the ravine upon his orders. After approximately 15 minutes one of Lieutenant Sarver’s men crawled out to him but was ordered back to safety. The soldier returned twice more before he dragged the lieutenant against his orders to the security of the ravine. He died in route to a medical aid station still with the safety of his men as his only concern. His gallantry and great sacrifice reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
