The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold L. Sandler (ASN: 0-1309612), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on the night of ** October 1943. Second Lieutenant Sandler, while leading a night reconnaissance patrol, was fired upon by an enemy machine gun, scattering his patrol. Without regard for his personal safety, he charged directly into the enemy fie with his tommy gun, thereby silencing the weapon and inflicting several casualties on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Sandler, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
