(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert L. Sammons, United States Army, for gallantry in action while leading a Parachute Infantry Patrol of the 3d Infantry Division, in Italy during World War II. In leading an attack on a vital bridge, Lieutenant Sammons captured an enemy machine gun position and routed the foe at the bridge. The entire operations was conducted under enemy fire with neither cover nor concealment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
