Headquarters, 75th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 31 (February 24, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Carl J. Salvo (ASN: 27476376), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 290th Medical Detachment, 75th Infantry Division, on 20 January 1945, in Belgium. Elements of the 290th Infantry Regiment, with an attached tank battalion, were attacking strong German positions near Burtonville, Belgium. As the attack progressed, a Sherman Tank was set afire. Three badly wounded tankmen managed to escape from the blazing tank, but collapsed near it. Private Salvo, a Medical Aid Man, ran forward through the intense enemy fire and administered first aid to the wounded soldiers and assisted them to cover. He then returned to the blazing tank where he aided two more soldiers, who had also been hit. During this entire period of time he was under excellent enemy observation and continuing fire. This utter disregard for his own safety and fearless conduct in the face of the enemy of Private Salvo, encouraged all who witnessed his act and reflects great credit upon himself and his unit. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
