The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George P. Sakrison, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 88th Infantry Division, in action on 25 September 1944, on Mount Acuto, Italy. Displaying conspicuous bravery, Sergeant Sakrison volunteered to neutralize the enemy machine guns. Accompanied by three enlisted men, Sergeant Sakrison crept up the hill in the face of incessant and murderous machine gun fire. When they approached within grenade range of the enemy emplacements, Sergeant Sakrison and his companions threw hand grenades into the nests. After the explosions, Sergeant Sakrison and the other men rushed the enemy positions. Sergeant Sakrison jumped into one emplacement with one of his companions, while the other two men jumped into the other emplacement. With one burst of their Tommy Guns, Sergeant Sakrison and his comrades killed the two enemy soldiers in this nest. As a result of the destruction of the two enemy machine gun positions, Company I was able to continue its advance and capture Mount Acuto. The magnificent courage and superb initiative displayed by Sergeant Sakrison is exemplary of the finest traditions of the American Soldier.
