The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William H. Sadler (ASN: 36606506), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 April 1945, in Germany. When the command group with which he was serving as Radio Operator was pinned down by intense enemy fire, Corporal Sadler remained with the radio vehicle despite the fire in order to maintain important radio communications with the artillery battalion. He remained in this hazardous position for an hour although his driver was seriously wounded and enemy fire struck the vehicle. While transmitting a message, he was wounded but completed his transmission before allowing himself to be treated. After receiving first aid he refused evacuation to the rear and returned to the artillery liaison section for duty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Sadler, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
