Headquarters, 88th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 26 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Samuel B. Sackman, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, in 1944. Private First Class Sackman was a member of a patrol assigned to raid a small Italian town and capture enemy prisoners. While his platoon was advancing over open terrain, the enemy opened up with a murderous hail of machine gun fire that raked the entire area. Seeing that his position afforded him a poor field of fire, Private First Class Sackman began to advance upon the enemy emplacements. His accurate rifle fire was responsible for the silencing of an enemy machine gun position. The magnificent courage, superb initiative, and determined aggressiveness displayed by Private First Class Sackman was a source of inspiration to his company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
