The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Tomlinson Recie Russ (ASN: 34058592), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1944, in France. Technician Fourth Grade Russ was serving in the capacity of radio operator with a forward observer party attached to assaulting infantry troops during a sustained drive against the enemy. The attacking forces were suddenly beset with a murderous barrage of enemy mortar, machine gun, and other small arms fire, and artillery support was desperately needed. Without hesitation, Technician Fourth Grade Russ moved forward in the face of the intense fire, assembled his radio and began the immediate transmission of fire commands. In the performance of this heroic service, Technician Fourth Grade Russ lost his life. The personal courage, aggressive determination, and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Russ reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
