The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William McCarthy (ASN: 89662), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Ferme de Meurcy, near Villers-sur-Fere, France, 29 July 1918. After having been wounded and ordered from the field, Private McCarthy went out into an area that was under accurate enemy machine-gun fire and the fire of our own artillery barrage, gave first aid to a wounded comrade, and carried him back to the dressing station.
