The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ray H. Rose (ASN: 0-1325054), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Rose was commanding a mortar platoon when his regiment bore the brunt of a fierce enemy counterattack which overran some of the positions. At great risk to his life, First Lieutenant Rose exposed himself to the enemy fire, placed his platoon in position and went forward personally to observe the fire. When his sector was threatened by a severe attack by enemy tanks, his bravery and skillful direction of mortar fire broke up the counterattack and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. His coolness under fie and demonstrated leadership prevented his men from becoming disorganized and materially contributed to combat successes. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Rose reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
