The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Fritz F. Roll, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Biak Island on 22 June 1944. During a suicidal attack by approximately 250 Japanese, Lieutenant Roll exhibited outstanding courage in directing the fire of his company which bore the brunt of the attack. He was at all times calm and collected and gave excellent instruction to his forward position by sound power telephone. He cautioned his troops to conserve ammunition which was extremely low due to the intensity of the attack. When positions of outer defenses were out of ammunition he was instrumental in securing tanks support. One hundred nine enemy were killed in this action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
