The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank A. Rogers, Jr. (ASN: 0-1307078), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 July 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Rogers was serving as a platoon leader with an infantry battalion engaged in an attack against the enemy. During the engagement, First Lieutenant Rogers’ platoon was pinned down by heavy enemy fire and almost completely surrounded. Continuing to press vigorously, he led his men through the enemy and succeeded in rejoining the battalion. First Lieutenant Rogers continually exposed himself to enemy fire in order to exhort and encourage his men in an effort to get maximum effect from their fire power by skillfully directing their efforts. Although seriously wounded, he remained with his platoon until contact had been reestablished with the battalion, after which he permitted himself to be evacuated. As a result of the indomitable fighting spirit exhibited by this gallant officer, his platoon was kept from annihilation and severe losses were inflicted on t he enemy, a contributing factor to the success of an important tactical operation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Rogers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
