The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank Rodriguez (ASN: 32531112), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on ** July 1943. In the vicinity of *****, Sicily, during the absence of his platoon sergeant during an attack on enemy positions. Private Rodriguez, with utter disregard for his own safety, voluntarily and on his own initiative exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery fire to lay the guns of his platoon, a duty normally performed by the platoon sergeant. In order that his metal helmet would not attract the sensitive instrument used in the laying operation, Private Rodriguez removed it even though it had been severely dented by shell fragments a few moments previously and had undoubtedly saved his life. His decisive action in the face of great danger reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
