The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James F. Ritter (ASN: 33048098), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 January 1945, in Belgium. Although a road junction was under enemy observation and machine gun fire and he was risking almost certain death, Private First Class Ritter crawled under the enemy fire to a wounded man. He was struck by the enemy fire as he was administering first aid and was instantly killed. Private First Class Ritter’s gallant self-sacrifice was a source of inspiration to all who observed him and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
