The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William F. Richards (ASN: -0-12868893), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 august 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Richards was assigned to duty as commanding office of an infantry company engaged in a bitter fire fight with hostile troops. During the fight, First Lieutenant Richards exposed himself many times to reconnoiter and maneuver his forces. When the company was caught under a terrific artillery fire which destroyed all save a remnant of his command, he successfully completed a reorganization under heavy fire and succeeded in withdrawing to a new position. Through his leadership and gallantry he saved his company from complete disorganization and possible annihilation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Richards, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
