The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Sergeant Edward G. Mason (ASN: 757108), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 55th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Jaulny, France, 10 November 1918. First Sergeant Mason continuously walked up and down his company sector, caring for the wounded and encouraging the men during an intense shell and machine-gun barrage. He was mortally wounded while going to the aid of two wounded comrades and died a short time afterward.
