The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Giacomo Masciarelli (ASN: 3110935), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Malancourt, France, 26 September 1918, Private Masciarelli alone charged a machine-gun nest, which was holding up the advance of his platoon. With a flanking fire, he killed one member of the crew and caused the rest to surrender. His prisoners consisted of one noncommissioned officer and seven privates.
