Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 127 (December 18, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George R. Reeves (ASN: 0-1294534), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 October 1944, in Germany. During an attack on one of the strongest points of the Siegfried Line, his Company Commander became a casualty, and First Lieutenant Reeves, the Executive Officer, immediately took command. His company was in an extremely precarious position. Its strength was depleted by casualties, and one flank was left unprotected because fierce resistance had prevented the adjoining infantry company from moving into position. The enemy launched a severe counterattack at the exposed flank, using a tank supported by infantry troops. Although two of his platoon leaders were lost during this counterattack, First Lieutenant Reeves moved calmly among his men from position to position, kept his company under control, and succeeded in repelling the counterattack. Four men of the company were wounded during the engagement and were isolated behind the enemy lines, about three hundred yards away. First Lieutenant Reeves left a guard with the men until nightfall, when he personally directed their evacuation. The outstanding courage and leadership demonstrated by First Lieutenant Reeves reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
