The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant William B. Redwine (ASN: 38214918), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 December 1944, in Belgium. Realizing that the position would be extremely hazardous, Staff Sergeant Redwine voluntarily manned a forward observation post and called for fire which knocked out two enemy vehicles, killing their occupants. When his battalion was ordered to withdraw, he gallantly refused to be panicked by the enemy but called for mortar fire which fell even on his own positions as he slowly withdrew with his comrades. Staff Sergeant Redwine’s heroic action partially disorganized the enemy, thereby impeding them sufficiently long to save many of his comrades from becoming casualties or being overrun. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Redwine, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
