Headquarters, 41st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (January 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Joseph Reddoor, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 163d Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Soupta, New Guinea, on 4 January 1943. Under heavy enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Reddoor led a patrol of six men within grenade range of an enemy machine gun next. He threw two grenades into the enemy position, destroying the crew, but under intense fire from snipers he could no longer advance. Staff Sergeant Reddoor then ran forward, firing his Thompson submachine gun until it was his by enemy fire and rendering it unserviceable. As enemy fire made the position of the patrol untenable, he ordered its withdrawal. Though twice wounded, he continued to lead his patrol to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Reddoor, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
