The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private Thomas J. Raia (ASN: 36958329), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 April 1945, in Germany. While leading his squad in the attack against enemy positions, they were suddenly subjected to fierce enemy machine gun, small arms, and bazooka fire, inflicting four casualties. Ordering his men to withdraw, Private Raia remained to cover their withdrawal. Although fully exposed and suffering a painful wound in the right eye, he stubbornly remained in his position killing four enemy snipers. After his men had withdrawn he rejoined them and continued to lead them until enemy resistance ceased in that area. His courageous leadership was an inspiration to his comrades and reflects great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
