The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Andrew P. Rahart (ASN: 32561750), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 March 1945, in Germany. An infantry company was held up in the attack by a tank immediately to their front which was supported by small arms and automatic weapons fire from well-entrenched positions. Staff Sergeant Rahart, a forward observer with a mortar platoon, observing the dangerous situation, moved forward through the fierce enemy fire to a position where he could observe the enemy tank. Setting up an observation post in a house, he directed friendly artillery on the tank which was forced to withdraw under the intense fire placed upon it. The company was then able to advance towards its objective. His calm and deliberate actions in the face of enemy fire reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
