The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard L. Raber (ASN: 0-1310305), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 411th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. On 30 November 1944, in the vicinity of Barr, France, Lieutenant Raber was leading a ration convoy to advancing infantry elements when fired upon by a five man enemy patrol, armed with automatic weapons. Realizing the immediate necessity of neutralizing the patrol in order that the ration supply could resume its schedule, Lieutenant Raber directed his driver to cover and armed only with a carbine sought out the hostile patrol. He flanked the enemy and opened fire from a distance of 20 yards, killing three and capturing two. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
