The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Vladimir Pseja (ASN: 32615974), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 17 September 1944. During a night attack against strong enemy fortifications, protected by barbed wire entanglements and equipped with automatic weapons, Sergeant Pseja, an assistant squad leader, personally led an attack against two machine gun emplacements which he had located while on a prior reconnaissance. Under the fierce fire of enemy weapons he moved forward to attack the gun crews with hand grenades, killing two and wounding three German soldiers. Then engaging the remainder of the group in an intense fire fight, he succeeded in silencing both machine gun nests with his sub-machine gun, although suffering from a serious wound incurred in the attack. His gallant display of initiative in moving forward alone to close with a strongly emplaced enemy force, assisted the company in breaching a part of the strong enemy lien and reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
