The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Rupert Prohme (ASN: 0-1288440), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy. Ordered to coordinate an infantry-tank counterattack southwest of Isola Bella, Italy, on the night of 5 February 1944, Captain Prohme found the infantry company digging in far short of their goal. Quickly contacting the company commander, Captain Prohme oriented and directed him to his objective. After reporting his progress by radio to the Regiment, he then continued on, disregarding mortar and machine gun fire which barely missed him, to direct organization of the ground taken and obtain liaison with the supporting tank platoon. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Prohme, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
