The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Robert L. Proctor (ASN: 35687099), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 16 November 1944 to 17 November 1944, in Germany. When an infantry force made an attack ac ross an enemy minefield, a large number of casualties were suffered from the concealed mines. An engineer detail of which Technician Fifth Grade Proctor was a member, was assigned the task of clearing lanes to the many wounded infantrymen. Since this was the type of minefield in which a mine detector was useless, Technician Fifth Grade Proctor had to probe every inch of the way so as not to set off any mines. With total disregard for his own safety, Technician Fifth Grade Proctor worked diligently for a long period of time to remove sixteen of huis wounded comrades. The following day he volunteered to direct a bulldozer through the minefield, thereby exposing himself to the mines. While probing paths to the remaining wounded, Technician Fifth Grade Proctor was wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Proctor, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
