The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Harold R. Prince (ASN: 38022318), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Italy during World War II. With utter disregard for his personal safety, subjected to constant small arms fire, Technical Sergeant Prince reconnoitered for a protected route of approach to his mortar position, returned and led his platoon into this position. Early the next morning he voluntarily contacted an officer and proceeded to an abandoned O.P., which was subject to direct tank and small arms fire. Disregarding this he directed the fire of his platoon with such effectiveness it immeasurably aided the British in stopping, breaking up and disorganizing the enemy penetration. That evening Technical Sergeant Prince led his entire platoon to a new position. Nearing this position an artillery concentration wounded four of his men. Under continuous fire, he personally aided and assisted them to a sheltered position. The next day he handed control of his platoon to his second in command and led a rifle platoon to help a friendly infantry battalion. During the three-day period, Technical Sergeant Prince acted without a platoon leader. His initiative, courage, concern for wounded and complete disregard for personal welfare is an inspiring example and is worthy of the highest praise. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
