The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George O. Prewitt (ASN: 0-2000483), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 335th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Belgium on 23 December 1944. When his platoon was surrounded by a force of approximately 20 enemy armored vehicles and infantry troops, Second Lieutenant Prewitt, displaying exceptional skill and leadership, managed to withdraw his men to their original starting point, only to discover the enemy in possession of the town. Second Lieutenant Prewitt, in a continuing display of courage and ingenuity, under an intense enemy mortar barrage, managed to hide his platoon in haystacks until nightfall. At that time, without maps or area sketches of any kind and with no knowledge of the position of his own or the enemy’s lines, Second Lieutenant Prewitt successfully withdrew his platoon from the enemy-held town and eventually made contact with friendly forces. The cool, resourceful leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Prewitt, resulting in the saving of many lives, reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
