The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Chester H. Prentice (ASN: 0-536737), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 March 1945, in Germany. First Lieutenant Prentice led a patrol under fire across a demolished bridge and through open fields to establish contact. He personally directed the fire of the patrol. After effectively engaging the enemy he led parties in search for wounded men, and although under small arms fire, he was able to direct evacuation. The courage and leadership demonstrated by First Lieutenant Prentice reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
