The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James D. Mabe (ASN: 1314736), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Having been severely wounded in the shoulder by shrapnel early in the attack, Private Mabe refused to leave his platoon, and, after losing his rifle, armed himself with grenades and cleaned out numerous enemy dugouts. Not until his company had taken his position for the night did he go to the rear.
