The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert A. Peters (ASN: 0-483830), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 October 1944, in Germany. During an attack against a sector of the Siegfried Line, First Lieutenant Peters observed his battalion being pinned down by long range machinegun fire from an enemy pillbox. Enemy artillery fire was heavy and there was danger of serious casualties unless the pillbox could be neutralized. Displaying outstanding courage, First Lieutenant Peters advanced alone in the face of the heavy enemy fire, selected a position for an anti-tank gun emplacement, and directed setting up the gun and delivering accurate fire against the hostile pillbox so that it was quickly destroyed. His daring, initiative, and fortitude made it possible for his battalion to continue their attack, which resulted in an important tactical victory. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Peters, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
