The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert A. Peters (ASN: 0-483830), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 21 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Peters volunteered for a reconnaissance party in advance of an assault group. Leading ahead of his own foot troops he encountered a full squad of the enemy. Holding them down with his carbine fire until his own men withdrew to safety, inching his way back, First Lieutenant Peters was able to prevent his battalion striking an ambush. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by First Lieutenant Peters reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
