The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clifford I. Peters (ASN: 36456309), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 December 1944 in France. Leading his company in first scout position, Private Peters boldly advanced over several hundred yards of open terrain under heavy enemy artillery fire. Caught in one extremely heavy concentration, he was seriously and painfully wounded, but insisted on continuing with his mission of feeling out enemy defenses in a town. Only when his unit was in complete control of its objective did he allow himself to be evacuated. The tenacity of purpose and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Private Peters reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
