The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade John C. Perren (ASN: 35314059), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. Technician Fourth Grade Perren was serving as an artillery mechanic with a tank destroyer battalion assisting in repulsing a vigorous enemy counterattack. In a desperate effort to reach the sea and divide American troops on the continent, the enemy was using an overwhelming mass of men and materiel. Very heavy artillery fire fell in the immediate area where Technician Fourth Grade Perren was serving, setting fire to a trailer loaded with ammunition which began to explode. With complete disregard for the hazards involved, Technician Fourth Grade Perren left the safety of his foxhole, and drove the vehicle out of the endangered area where he succeeded in extinguished the blaze, As a result of his caring, valuable, and vitally needed ammunition was saved. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade Perren, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
