The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Guy L. Pearl (ASN: 33447266), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 July 1944, near *****, France. After a bridgehead was established across a swamp, Private First Class Pearl and another man were sent back across the swamp to lay wire to the forward observation post. In the course of performing this mission they were subjected to enemy artillery fire, both were rendered unconscious by the concussion and Private First Class Pearl was wounded. When the recovered consciousness Private First Class Pearl’s companion assisted him to the aid station for medical treatment. They then returned to the swamp and completed the mission. Through the effective artillery support that was made possible by their heroic actions the infantry was able to continue its advance. The conspicuous devotion to duty and heroic courage of this enlisted man reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
